Hi all!

Can anyone with high schoolers advise me on what's in style/proper etiquette for prom this year? My son has a date but has never gone (or even dated) before. I don't want his date to be upset because he didn’t't think of something he should have, and being a transplant, I'm not sure if there are any particularly Southern traditions.

Also, any tuxedo advice? Do they still match the tie/vest to the date's dress? He'd rather just wear a classic all black. Also, what's the standard for corsages, wrist or bodice?

Hopefully he will communicate with his date about things and I am just being a mother hen who needs to sit down, but he's a bit flaky and doesn't know what he doesn't know. He just asked his date and now we're off on Spring break, so the time crunch is adding to my stress.

Thank you!

Unless he can get a swatch or picture of the color of her dress I would go with all black. We tried to match my son's date (same situation as you - not a "real" date, they all went as a group and just matched up) and it was a fail because he is clueless. Yes on the corsage. The girls all wear wrist corsages. I don't know where you live - I got my son's corsage at Cary Florist in DT Cary and was happy with the price, you can order online which was very easy.

Prom is more low key here than it is in NY, where we are from. The girls all get dressed up etc but it's not the huge blowout that it had become in the 80s and 90s. A lot of kids don't even do limos. We did get a limo for our large group and I was happy because the event was in downtown Raleigh and it absolutely monsooned that night.

Oh, and we ended up buying the tux. It was cheaper than renting.

Can't go wrong with a classic tux. And a wrist corsage is always best because it avoids the awkwardness of how to pin flowers to her chest area.

LOL! Or if you cannot afford that, a leisure suit would work in a pinch.

Well, back in my day (30 years ago, yuck) it was pretty common for the girl and the guy to talk over outfit color choices to determine if coordination was wanted or not, so I’d encourage him to check with the girl.

Generally matchy-matchy is frowned upon these days. It's a dated look.

You'll look like a toad if you don't pick up your prom date in tux

Hit the Formalwear Outlet in Hillsborough this morning and got lucky! Went with all black, very nice looking. He's a junior, so it made sense to buy, hopefully he doesn’t grow too much in the next year!

They are very helpful there, it was a good experience, and cheaper than renting.

Thanks for the advice and the laughs!

We got ours there too. My son is a senior but my sister said her boys went to a few formals while at State so hopefully he will get use of it (unless he grows 4 inches in college like his grandfather did).
