The I-95 corridor in South Carolina is fairly depressing too.

95 KILLED so many local businesses that used to be on 301, which parallels 95 and was the N-S route until 95 came. It was small highway through many little towns, no doubt maddening when you are trying to get somewhere, but all along the route were local businesses that benefitted, since it wasn't an interstate and at peak times, there was always someone stopping by.

I think 95 had a lot to do with the condition of towns like RM where only the businesses located on Hwy exits--nearly always national chain ones, not locals--benefit from all the folks passing through.
Fair point, but as far as today goes, it’s not just chains that benefit from I-95. There are distribution centers/warehouses that use it (plus the Cummins engine plant in Whitakers) and as I’ve already mentioned, I-95 played a big part in CSX building their terminal and has also helped lure Triangle Tire Co. and Corning, both of which are locating just east of Rocky Mount at the Kingsboro megasite off of US-64 and will bring much needed jobs to an area that could really use them. As for US-301, Wilson is currently trying to revitalize that corridor.

Regarding Rocky Mount, the loss of the textile mills and the effects of Hurricane Floyd did more damage to the city’s economy than I-95. The current rotten city government is just the icing on the cake.

I would also argue that not all of the worst towns are on I-95. Take a trip to Kenly and then go to Warsaw, which is off I-40 in Duplin County and tell me which one you’d pick if you had to choose between the two. I’ve been to both (lived in one), so I already have my answer.

More depressing than NC, IMO. At least NC has more civilization. I used to like stopping at South of the Border. It’s a shame to see what it’s become.

I grew up in Rocky Mount in the 50's, it was a beautiful town. Hopefully one day it comes back to life.

I-95 in VA is a better choice for living than I-95 in NC/SC.

Rocky Mount is sketchy as hell. There, I said it bluntly. The whole I-95 corridor from just a mile or 2 south of Richmond all the way down past Savannah is BAD. No place East of Raleigh I'd live in NC to raise a family. Poverty, crime, down-on-their-luck, poor community resources and infrastructure. A highlight of going out to eat in Rocky Mount would be Golden Corral. Top off the evening with a stop at Sonic. Get the picture?

So Rocky Mount's city manager is from Savannah? Another disaster of a city (don't get me wrong the touristy area on the river is charming). Oher than what SCAD has done for restoring the parts of downtown Savannah that they own, it's dangerous and sketchy too. I feel so sorry for the DMV employees who are being transferred to Rocky Mount from Raleigh.

Yep. Rochelle Small-Toney used to be the city manager there. Unlike Rocky Mount, Savannah was smart enough to give her the boot. This should bring you up to speed.

Rocky Mount wouldn’t be quite as bad if there were competent people running the place.

Thats an absurd comment. Lots of good places east of Raleigh to raise a family. Come on.

Really?? Not Wilmington? None of the beach towns? Not Greenville or New Bern or Morehead City or Little Washington or Edenton or Beaufort or Southport? Brunswick County NC is one of the fastest growing counties in the state!

Now, I will agree that there's not many places right along I-95 that I'd choose, but there are plenty of places east of Raleigh that I like.

Rocky Mount would just be pretty low on my list of places I'd want to live, but plenty of other places in eastern NC that are nice enough.

ALL of I-95 sucks, from north to south, every last mile of it. I avoid
it like the plague whenever possible and prefer to take 301... for obvious
reasons of course.

More accurately Petersburg, Va and south -- 2 miles from Richmond is suburbs still.
