Peach tree & blueberry bush protection (new house, neighborhood, move)

I just found out that I have a peach tree and a blueberry bush at our new house (and probably others, I need to ID a bunch of things!)


The peach tree already has a lot of fruit on it, as does the blueberry bush. I'm reading about them now but wanted to know if you protect your fruit with nets or something else? People are talking about putting "footies" on each individual peach as they grow, and thinning them out.


A net on the blueberries would be fairly simple. Individual footies on each peach is a bit more involved!


Also, saw the first deer in my neighborhood last night munching on my neighbor's roses.

Fruit should be thinned when they are about the size of a nickel. Remove enough fruit so that the remaining ones are spaced about 4 to 6 inches apart along the branch (Figure 4). Even though it may look like very few fruit remain, the increased fruit size at harvest plus reduced risk of tree breakage and improved prospects for next year's crop will more than compensate for the reduced number of fruit.

Ok looks like I'm going to be thinning tomorrow night.

Protect your blueberries with netting if you care about harvesting them for yourself, or the robins and starlings will do it for you. Then they look for your car...
