I did a search on past threads on this topic but did not find what I was looking for. I'm looking for a gym in the North Raleigh area that is nice, clean and up to date.
I would be using free weights and tread mills as part of my daily routine. I would prefer they had a pool, Jacuzzi and a steam room for relaxation after a hard work out.
I checked out the YMCA in N Raleigh (Wake Field). They gave me 4 free passes but to be honest, I was disappointed. The Y has about everything I was looking for however, there are way too many kids and old people for me. I was told that kids in the year around schools "track out" here so I found a lot of 13 & 14 year olds sitting on exercise machines talking to there friends and it is obvious they don't want to be there.
The locker rooms are filled with old fat guys that do nothing but sit and watch you change clothes and shower (scary)! They also have carpet in the locker room that "stinks to high heaven"...who puts carpet in a gym locker room???
Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. I have almost come to the conclusion that a "good gym" does not exist in the Raleigh area!
I like Lifetime Family Fitness. However, the location in Plantation Point - across from Triangle Town Center - does not have a pool. I will say that it is very clean and has the most up to date equipment. The location on Six Forks next to COSTCO has a pool. Like the Y, there is no contract. And, I didn't pay a sign on fee. You can choose to join one location or all.
I've also been a member of the Wake Forest Y and Gold's Gym.
Gold's Gym at Celebration off Six Forks is older but is clean and has a pool and raquetball courts. I also frequented the North Hill's location. It was nice and had lots of equipment. But, personally, I didn't like the atmosphere. I had to sign a year contract at Gold's Gym, but they were willing to let me check out the facility for a weekend prior to signing on. In the past month, I've received emails and calls from Gold's Gym trying to win me back. So, there may be room for negotiation there...
Take a look art Healthtrax on Six Forks near 540. It has an older crowd (i.e not a meat market), and has all the latest equipment/free weights, pool, sauna, hot tub, bb court , aerobic studios, spin, pilates ,....
