That stretch of 540 is usually dead. People just don't want to pay the tolls. It was a bad idea.
Not during rush hour. Have not been on it in the morning, but I've been on it in the evening and there is a ton of traffic coming out of the park. Not enough to cause backups, but the road is definitely getting usage. If we have to go to Holly Springs or Fuquay, we're using the toll road even though the toll is ridiculously expensive, relatively speaking. It is worth it - taking 55 the whole way? No thanks.
I have an EZ pass on one car and the NC transponder sticker on the other (original when they first opened the 1st leg of the toll rd). I use it for one toll exit every single day for work on the NC transponder with no issues ever. My wife has the EZ pass in her car and uses it to commute from Apex to RTP every workday as well.
About once every month or so her transponder must not be read properly, so they send us a bill in the mail. It usually takes about 3 weeks or so after the toll until we get the bill. I haven't yet called since it would literally save us $.40-.50 cents to dispute it and get it put on our EZ pass account instead, but it's starting to get frustrating.
I may just call soon and tell them about it. They'll probably tell me the transponder is not properly placed, but I know for a fact it is and if it wasn't why would it work 98% of the time? I wonder if it has anything to do with all the radar and camera systems they have in newer cars that are placed on the windshield (next to where the transponder would be) and in our grill. Maybe it onl interferes with the signal every once in a while? Who knows...
Even that doesn't always work. I drove 540 daily for a couple years and would get a bill every month for 2 or 3 times it didn't read the transponder correctly. This happened with both the window sticker and the full transponder after I upgraded to use it in other states.
The part that I found really annoying was my license plate was correctly linked to the account with the transponder but their system couldn't figure out to just charge the credit card on file when it had to fall back on license plate recognition. I'd have to log in to the web site each time to pay a buck or two every month.
Just saw your post. Yep, Obviously I've had the same issue from time to time.
Between western wake growth and the completion of the loop, it'll be a parking lot. Drop the tolls, forget about it.
I agree, keeping it tolled would be preferable. If it weren't tolled and with the growth that western Wake has experienced and will continue to experience it would get just like I-540. As you mentioned, as they finish up the loop in the coming years it's going to get worse even with the tolls. Could you imagine what it would look like in 5,10,20 years without tolls.
The only benefit of dropping the tolls would be less congestion on 55, Davis, etc. However we will reach a point where it won't matter.
Agreed. With the current and new growth that will keep coming to the area, the possible lessening of traffic on the main roads would be temporary at best.
I have the decal, never had a problem with it getting read correctly.
Did you choose the decal because of an issue with your windshield? Was it an option that you picked?
