They seem to all be just fine, if you're not asking about the more modern HOA neighborhoods with optional golf (Devil's Ridge, 12 Oaks, etc).
Treyburn struggles because Clay Hamner's vision was apparently STILL so far ahead of the times. Durham just hasn't grown out there, and the industrial park hasn't generated enough jobs/memberships.
MacGregor Downs has some struggles (evidenced by selling the course/club operations), but seems to be doing just fine. I don't see anything drastic happening to it.
Speaking of golf courses...I never realized that it is important to determine who owns the course before you buy a home that is on the golf course.
I had a client years ago that was looking to buy a home around the golf course in Wake Forest. He couldn't figure out why the homes were so inexpensive. The more I researched it, finally discovered the golf course was being sold. All those folks that paid so much $$$ to have a golf course lot were very angry.

I've been seeing ads these past few months for Chapel Hill Country Club to come out and check it out and get a pass to enjoy the club for a day. So it does seem like they are trying to recruit more members.
Golf is a dying sport, or at least in a clear protracted long-term decline.
Ask the former owners of Crooked Creek or Cheviot Hills, or other struggling operators.
Both 12 Oaks and Brier Creek are having membership drives. 12 Oaks is a growing community with a very healthy golfing population (it's getting harder to get a weekend tee time).
Is it weird that a town the size of Cary has only one mediocre public golf course?
When I moved to the area some time back I thought it odd that there weren't more public courses in the Triangle. Since then 2 courses have shut down (Lakeshore in Durham and Crooked Creek in Fuguay). The community I used to live (population ~ 175,000) in had 4 municipal courses, 1 University course and 3 country clubs.
