The Chapel Hill restaurants that are long gone and I liked were the original Rathskeller, the Ranchhouse
Loved those two! Always enjoyed the Rathskeller when I went to Carolina Basketball School in the 60’s. The Ranchhouse was one of the best steakhouses around for years.
Do y'all remember The Farm House Steak House in Chapel Hill? I don't know if there was a connection to the Ranch House or not. As far as I can tell it is still up and running. I'm not a steak person myself so have never been there. The Farm House Restaurant
Another restaurant I miss is Bakatsias in north Durham. It as in Loehmann's Plaza on Hillandale, just north of I-85. Gourmet food and service. Georgio seems to have a short attention span, opening and closing restaurants fairly quickly.
Dunno why the Restaurant Closing thread got closed ... but Oak City Meatball is apparently taking an extended hiatus from service, and seems doubtful to reopen anytime soon. Miss that place.
Just now went back and read this thread again. Amazing the number of remembered restaurants that have closed. I guess if I had to pick only one, the place I miss the most is Crowley's on Medlin Drive in west Raleigh.
More recently, I miss Oakwood Cafe in DT. Loved the food and my wife and I became friends with the owner's family. We were weekly regulars for about 20 years. I think I read somewhere that the owner was possibly opening somewhere, making Argentine cuisine available again.
To Wildflour Pizza and Mr Dunderbak's that I mentioned on 6/17/2019, I'll add the since-closed Boondini's and Tokyo House in north Raleigh.
Billy Williams, the owner of Boondini's, was disappointed when his landlord refused to renew the lease, but in retrospect his timing couldn't have been better... Covid would have wrecked his business just a few months later.
Dunno why the Restaurant Closing thread got closed
Me either.
At this point its not places that are gone that I miss but ones I suspect who may not survive the pandemic.
