...and so it begins... the end of "gritty" Capital Blvd. as we know it is in full swing...
Exiting gritty. Entering sanitized... Raleigh in all of its "faux character" style.

Yup, sounds about Righ- I mean, sounds about Raleigh ...
At least Gateway Restaurant will still be there...
______________
Ashley's Christensen's former head pastry chef is opening up his own joint in the center called Union Special, that will offer sweet and savory treats.
HQ Raleigh is also planning to set up shop where entrepreneurs and start-up companies can fine-tune their plans
In addition, Brew Coffee and a brewery will be on tap.
This Retro Strip Mall is About to Be Raleigh’s Hottest Destination to Eat, Work & Play
We bet you never thought you’d be dying to go hang out at a strip mall, but that’s about to be the case with Gateway Plaza. This retro strip mall has been under the knife the last couple years, getting a major refresh (thanks to Loden Properties) to make it a fit for the newer, cooler Raleigh. If you’ve been to Austin, this will feel familiar—the city loves reviving old shopping centers and packing them full of new creative ventures, and now Raleigh is getting in on the fun.
So would you rather it........just stay like it is now? That parking lot there is K-Mart sized yet there's never more than a handful of cars parked there - nobody really has a reason to go to that shopping center.
Also I'll note that Wake County is planning on upgrading transit service between downtown Raleigh and Gateway Plaza in the next 5 years - what use is spending on that transit service if there are no destinations/housing along the route?

Many years ago that parking lot was full. The space was originally Arlen's Department Store...K-Mart like.

Only reason to go there is Gateway Restauraunt. I've been eating there for 20 years now. Love the place and the owners. So glad this shopping center is getting a make-over. Hopefully it will bring them the wealth they deserve.
Gritty is fine if it's good use of space and interesting...Gatway plaza is not. It's a decrepit, overgrown old parking lot for an old strip plaza of uninteresting tenants. I would rather visit that new plaza in the OP a thousand times over. Still too large of a parking lot, though....

You say that like it's a Bad thing.....looks good from where I'm standing
I’ve taken a class at Craft Habit in that shopping center and am excited for the new changes. Not a whole lot to visit otherwise.
