Quote:
Six weeks after Northeast Raleigh was inundated with nearly eight inches of rainfall within a four-hour period, the U.S. 401 (Louisburg Road) bridge over the Little River has reopened a full six weeks ahead of schedule.

Original estimates following the flood event that wiped out this and other structures in the area pegged the reopening for August 31. N.C. Department of Transportation engineers worked with a contractor that was already onsite and under contract to replace the bridge to fast-track the project.

It always interests me how projects can get done so quickly after a disaster (flood, earthquake, etc) but drag on and on and on otherwise.

Give enough financial incentives and someone will put all their resources on a project

So what premium did NCDOT actually pay for this bridge, compared to what it would have cost had it been built in due course during the widening of 401?

I initially read this as "Money talks, I-85 walks." Which makes sense if you've had to drive all of Interstate 85 in North Carolina and dealt with some construction since, oh, I don't know, 1982?
