It is a convenience (and cost savings) to me to pay on-line. I elected not to have that convenience and saved the $3.00, by paying for my renewal the next time I happened to drive by a tag office (South Hills in Cary).
That said, I am not sure how much of a cost savings it is to the state, since those employees in the tag offices now have to spend time to serve cheapskates like me.
A few years ago when I was at NCDOT, there was a big push from the state legislature to outsource work to the private sector. Did it save any money? Likely not but at the very least the legislators are happy that the "lazy, inefficient" state employees aren't doing as much anymore compared to their corporate pals in the private sector.
We recently were offered an opportunity to pay a bill online but with a $44 convenience fee to pay with credit or debit. You'll get a check, if I can find them thanks. No thanks. $3-5 has been normal for a while. $44 is concert ticket bad, and it was a bill, not tickets!

LOL $44 sounds like a fee Ticketmaster would put on a $60-70 ticket.
Two pages of comments about a silly $3 charge to pay online???? You pay online and have immediate confirmation that the payment is received and you dont have to buy stamps and envelopes and write out a check and worry if the check is lost in the mail. Good grief....

How much do you pay to pay your phone bill? Your water bill? Your car insurance bill?
Stop rationalizing that it's OK to pay a company for the convenience of collecting payment.
yeah those fees burn my biscuit. Specifically the fee to renew your CCW, you pay a fee I think 4 bux, all they do is fill out the PDF for you to print out and carry down to the public safety office. I assumed I was saving a trip downtown. NOPE. The county could make a PDF you could fill out on your PC and print out but no we need to pay a 3rd party to do it for them.

I dont pay a fee for any of those so if there is one or two that charges a fee, I dont really have a problem with it. So...no. I wont stop rationalizing that its okay. I dont mind. But you obviously have your knickers all up in a wad about this. Is it really worth the high blood pressure?
For Duke Energy, there is a $1.50 convenience fee per bill if you pay via credit/debit or eCheck
Yeah I used to do online bill pay via bank with them. But now I open up credit cards and make large payments to collect the bonus. So for example $1500 payment, I earn $30 in cash back (2%) plus get between 15%-30% off that due to cash back bonus.
