If you have a gas stove you can cook on the stovetop....just turn the burner to "light" (when it's clicking) and use a match or lighter to light the burner.
In NY we had an old gas stove with a pilot light and no electric starter. I appreciated that stove whenever we lost power! Shortly after Sandy came through an ice storm hit. Our power went our again. We were lucky some people still had not gotten power back after Sandy. We made hot chocolate on that stove for the crews (all from out of state) who were working outside in the freezing cold to get our power back on.
FYI, I went to the Walmart neighborhood store near me to get a gallon of water for my fish tank and then realized that people must be stock piling because there were no gallons to be found! If you are on the hunt, Harris Teeter has plenty.
A question for the food prep experts - any suggestions for nutritious, non-boring, dare I say fun meals that can be prepared with no heat / no refrigeration?
What creations have you come up with, say, after a week goes by.
I lived in FL and lost power for a week after Wilma.
After a few days, we found a couple restaurants with power and ate in restaurants for the food and the ac
Also, Publix was open very fast, running on generators. I was impressed. Maybe the credit card machines won’t work, so cash is smart.
What’s the deal with water? I was at Publix today and there was a huge wall of gallon jugs. I have lived in Wake Cty since 1990. Lots of storms, both hot and cold variety. Never has my water either not run or been compromised, yes City of Ral water. I think this water craziness is new in last few years?

I guess there always the chance that flood waters could take out a water main. City water could become contaminated, or a uprooted tree could take out the line that runs to your house. Not a bad idea to have a backup water supply.

There are some in Wake County who are on well water. We are on the Wake/Franklin County border and have a well. My parents used to live off Mt Vernon Church Rd and they had well water. As the area has grown and the more rural areas have developed, there is more need for bottled water (for drinking) if there is a possibility of a power outage.
I only drink water from a 1,000 year old aquifer that is filtered through a moss that is only found in France. I have it shipped to me weekly on a private jet. And yes, I bathe with it. Why would I use anything else?
We're still in the cone so there's just as much chance it will hit the Triangle as the coast as of right now. It's been trending east so that may change. The reality is, nobody will really know until tomorrow or Wednesday at the earliest.
ahhh, yes ... the hoarding of goods in a panic-driven desire to have everything you need.
I just left the coast, and I saw places still recovering from last year's hurricanes. My thoughts are with them.
