I saw it when I was at the Gorman Exit off I40 around 8:00 pm. It was large, low, and as the OP said, strangely shaped. Also, lots of green lights, when most planes have white, red and green lights. I tried to get a shot of it on my phone but it was the wrong angle. Freaky. And I have to say, a little unnerving.
Yes, I was on Hwy 751 heading towards Hwy 1 when I saw it, pulled over to see what the heck it was and take a video. It was a group of small propeller planes, flying in formation. At that point the lights were mainly red and blue, as I got closer to Raleigh I saw them again near hwy 1 and their lights were green. I assumed they were practicing for the air show in Smithfield this Saturday, but maybe it was for the game.

Ok, that could explain it. It was so dark we could only see the lights. It was pretty loud, but maybe with a bunch of props it could be that loud. Seems odd to fly in formation in the dark though. A lot could go wrong.
