Here is a short punch list of events (spread over years and administrations) that has actually happened. Full stop. Not fake news.
1. Previous admin created a Pandemic response team as a result of H1N1
2. Current Admin kills the team in 2018 because basically they felt pandemics aren't National Security threats.
3. Pandemic shows up in 2020 laying bare the lack of that group to provide guidance to lower state level leaders (which is where the response to something like this would be pushed, with the financial and logistical backing of the Feds)
4. Current POTUS tweets (literally 6 hours ago) blaming the previous administration for, among other things, not having a Pandemic response team.
I mean.....if this isn't political...La Corbata Larga has a strange way of agreeing with that sentiment.
ETA - And this ignores the gutting of the CDC (both in Brainpower and funding) that has occurred. The OMB official just this week defended to Congress the 2021 budget cuts to Health and Human Services ($9.5B cut) with specifically a 15% cut to the CDC and a $35M cut to the Infectious Disease Rapid Response Reserve fund. Just this week....defended it.....

County public health departments are our first line of defense when it comes to anything public health-related. The drastic reduction of funding to CDC affects these local departments and last-minute emergency funding isn't a valid substitute for normal ongoing funding. There's no time to adequately train staff, order equipment, shore up contingency plans, etc. when the emergency hits; all of that needs to be handled when everything is normal.

Correct. To use another example to illustrate the point. The same "concept" is why it took the US basically a year plus to ramp up the infrastructure, man power, production capacity, materials etc for WW2 after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
It took 6 months for the first Air Force raids, the first land battles were between 9 and 11 months later and the first naval battle was 6 months later.
There is a “nightmare scenario” for a global disease spreading like wildfire. This is it. We are living it. This is the “what if the person who runs the water treatment plant or the people who run NORAD can’t get to work scenario”. It is HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS with NO vaccine and NO treatment and it’s going to be here in the US for at least another month.

Well then by all means, PANIC and buy every last roll of toilet paper on the store shelf. That’s the problem and the far greater risk. A percentage of the population (even if not the majority) is behaving irrationally and buying up all the rolls of toilet paper, hand sanitizer, masks, demanding that schools be closed, and that’s going to put a strain on resources. As I’ve said before, I’m far greater concerned about the strain on resources because of irrational fear and panic...leading to the shutting down of services and unavailability of supplies that are needed for everyday life or other emergencies.
In just about every situation imaginable except full-scale war, the existence of the nation does not depend on who's living in the White House and, for that matter, who's running the U.S. House and Senate. Although the distributed and decentralized nature of our non-authoritarian government has disadvantages in some circumstances, it also has the advantage that the correct path through a crisis can be identified and then implemented without depending on a czar to make every decision.
That's true whether the White House is red or blue, whether occupied by an Abraham Lincoln or a Warren Harding.
While technically true, the existence of our nation is almost never the issue, and certainly isn't as related to CV. However, almost everything short of the termination of our country IS affected by who's living in the White House and who's running Congress. We're clearly seeing that in the response to CV. And we've clearly seen it, for better and for worse) in many other circumstances (and not just over the past 3 years).
50% reduction doesn’t sound terribly reassuring. And you will be fine if you are not in a high-risk group. For them it’s hitting much harder than a mild flu. Odds are even if you aren’t in one of those groups, that you are in close contact with someone that is.
Y2K was a theoretical problem in which the theory was proven wrong. There is nothing theoretical about covid-19.
