My gas gauge was on empty and the warning light was lit yesterday so I pulled up to a pump at Sheetz on Glenwood Ave. I usually gas up with 87 octane regular but there was also an option for 88 Unleaded. The price was $1.99/gal vs $2.45 for the 87 grade. So I added about 1/4 tank of the 88. It has 15% ethanol whereas regular 87 is 10%.

The web says all vehicles labeled as Flex Fuel and those newer than 2001 model year can safely use this fuel. My light truck is a 2010 model.

So far I can't detect any difference in performance, starting, or idling. Unless someone can direct me to information that says not to use it in my vehicle, I'm going to continue using it. And save 15-45 cents per gallon.

Anyone have experience with the 88? Good, bad, or indifferent?

The main diff is meant to be the gas mileage. Keep track for awhile to see if that happens for you.

Will do. I'm sort of anal about recording gas mileage so I should be able to see a difference if there is one.

Expect a decrease in mpg the higher percentage of ethanol.

The difference between those 2 is going to be pretty small - I wouldn't worry about it. How about you go electric now? That's the future.

Yeah, E15 is only going to cost you a couple percentage points of MPG, obviously much more than offset by the cheaper price. As long as you’re sure your vehicle can use it, no harm in filling up with it.

Default Boaters' Beware

Don't put that mess in your outboard motors.

I'll take a 2-5% drop in mpg for a (currently) 20% savings in fuel cost.

Anything else you want him to do? Maybe a solar roof or a couple of powerwalls? Geothermal hvac?

Like everyone else has already said, you'll be fine. I doubt you would even notice a drop in MPGs since you only added a 1/4 tank.

I used to add ethanol to the gas for my "fun" car (if I couldn't find e85) due to the higher octane rating. With proper tuning, I could squeeze more power out of it. I miss that car
