Well at least everyone can keep ordering to-go mixed drinks in the mean time.

This bill still needs to make it to Cooper’s desk, but he’s going to get tons of pressure in the next few weeks. Not sure how he’ll handle this in the best way.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Republican lawmakers are drafting legislation to reopen schools amid the pandemic and plan to release a proposal in the coming days, state Senate leadership said Thursday afternoon.

The bill would likely require all public school districts to offer in-person learning but also give parents the option of virtual learning if they choose.

I hope that bill gets bipartisan support. It should. Scientists and health care providers support this.

Do scientists support this without social distancing?

There will be enough people choosing to stay virtual that social distancing shouldn't be an issue.

That doesn't really matter since the more that do virtual, the less teachers available in the school. Right?

It's too bad schools are built like bomb shelters, otherwise they could probably just temporarily take down walls between classrooms.

Wrong, completely wrong! They were not social distancing before in WCPSS when they brought k-3 back at full capacity. When they bring 4th and 5th at full capacity they will have up to 30 kids in a classroom. Current class size for 4th at our elementary school is 25 kids. The room is not big enough to maintain 6 feet of distance. They only way they can bring grades back a full capacity is with less than 6 feet of social distance. They do not have the staff it it is irrelevant that more than half the kids are in VA. If you have 3 classes in VA and 2 in plan B, they all need teachers and there is no money to hire additional teachers to spread them out.

Science does not support a return to full capacity with less than 6 feet of distance and the current GA has never had students best interests at heart when it came to public education. This is pure bluster on the part of the GA. They claim they want to let districts make the decision of how and when to open, then they should stay out of it.

Nope and neither does the data.

I’m thinking of elementary school, where there have already been more kids than social distancing allows.

I read the article. Looking forward to reading the actual Bill to see if they are going to force schools to drop cohorts and have all the non VA kids daily. With VA kids taking VA staff, that would pack middle and high and high school classrooms.

Wish I could trust the GA to have regard for science in a pandemic.
