Does anyone have recommendations for short-term, pet-friendly (we have 2 dogs, both under 5 lbs) rentals in or near Cary or Apex that are affordable, maybe less than $1400 per month?

My lease at my apartment in Florida is up in June (kind of bad timing with this virus thing going on, I know) and my husband's business didn't work out so well here, so I think we're ready to proceed with our original plan, which was to move to the Cary area! He's a chiropractor so I'm hoping he won't have much trouble finding work.

I've had some less than satisfactory experiences renting houses here in Florida (issues with property managers not maintaining the rental), so I think a short-term rental would be best until we can go house-hunting in person. However, I'm open to hearing any suggestions from those who have relocated to the area without much cash in hand. I've been saving since I knew we would be moving in June either way, but of course moving out of state costs more than moving down the street!

You should be able to get an apartment short term fairly easily. 3 to 6 months.

Houses will be more difficult, though.

No job and no cash might be a problem. Is your credit score good? Any evictions?

Less than 6 months. 3 months is probably ideal.

This seems like a big ask for the price. There is certainly a short term rental business here driven by the string of professionals relocating in and out. In my experience those would likely start in the $2,500 range and go quickly up from there depending upon inclusions, and furnished vs. unfurnished. I would suggest the private route vs. the big rental corporation for this situation. You may get lucky with someone wanting to exit a lease early. Pets obviously limit the options dramatically. Good luck!

I would look around the universities. There may be many students who were living off campus who went home when classes were cancelled. I know for my daughter's college (not around here), there are people on the Facebook page everyday trying to sublease their kids' apartments from now until August. Might be worth looking into.
