Yes, tip generously. Grocery stores pay garbage wages and these people are providing an essential service despite literally risking their lives to do so. They aren't doctors, nurses or any sort of first-responders, they're hourly employees who stand on their feet all day. And now, they're getting to be routinely put at risk of infection from a highly contagious virus as a result.

Anywhere you go nowadays where the people providing you a service that's not truly essential in nature, do whatever you can to thank them, including sticking your hand a little deeper in your pocket.

I used Harris Teeter pickup a few time last year. From what I remember, there is no option online or when you pay to tip, so you would need to do it in cash. I also think they aren't supposed to accept tips, but times are different now and HT might look the other way right now. If I used the service, I would probably at least offer a tip.

I’ve been doing my grocery shopping online with Lowe’s for the past 4 weeks. Yes, I tip the person who loads my groceries. There is no option to tip online.

Keep in mind that the person who loads your groceries into your car may not be the person who did the shopping. And there likely isn't any sort of 'tip share' policy. So the person at the front of the store who takes the groceries to the car might be making a lot in tips while the people actually doing the shopping might be getting nothing.

True.
However, I see shoppers also loading cars. I expect they rotate through as needed.

One thing that was mentioned is that some grocery stores have a policy that their shoppers can't receive tips. So make sure to check up on that before giving a cash tip.

Why? If for some reason they can't accept it, they'll decline it. And they have been told by their store manager its ok to accept a tip, regardless of what the website says. If nothing else, they'll know they are appreciated.

At HT, the shoppers run their butts off, with 30-50 orders a day.

Harris Teeter strictly prohibits their employees accepting tips. If they get caught accepting it's grounds for termination.

I could be wrong but I think the OP is talking about EMPLOYEES who bring groceries to your car....not gig economy people like Instacart who deliver to your home.

This is from the Harris Teeter site in regards to the Express Lane for picking up groceries:

Tipping

It is our pleasure to provide this service to you, our valued customer. Providing this service is the primary responsibility of every Harris Teeter employee, therefore tips are not accepted. Your return business, recommendation to friends and family, and thanks are the best tip we can receive.

Harris Teeter definitely took the tip both times we did grocery pickup. I understand if that is their policy in regular times, but they deserve tips during the pandemic.
