I haven't used my AAA membership a lot, but I always have them bring the cars back to the house. But I generally trust my wrenching abilities above the average shop. Never had them try to hassle me about bringing it to their shop instead.
As someone stated, for the roadside assistance portion, check with your car insurance company.
I can't remember the cost to add-on but I know if was cheaper than AAA's annual membership rate(s).
But, as I mentioned earlier, auto insurance companies can treat your call for a tow that same as for an accident.
