Curious what folks here think about the bargain chicken being sold by Raeford and Mountaire farms.
Seems it's 40 pound boxes at a really good deal ~ 88 cents a pound for some cuts.
IMHO, selling it in this fashion is prob. catering to hoarders, for the most part.
Disclaimer...I understand some folks prob. share with other family members/friends though & kudos to those who do.
Why can't these companies re-package it for retail and get some of it out in the grocery stores?
Looks like a lot of folks that are traveling for miles to get it are saying they're buying this chicken since they can't find it in the grocery stores.
In our area most ALL kind of meat is scarce, as are tp, paper towels, hand soap, etc . still .
Would love to see them get it in the grocery stores that have bare meat shelves and enforce limits on buying .
As long as there's "some" chicken in the grocery stores, I'm cool with that. I had to buy organic chicken breasts last trip but at least it was still available.
??? I've had no problem buying whole chickens for 95-99 cents a pound at Walmart. I've seen big packages of boneless breasts there, too. Food Lion has had plenty of meat - the T-bone steaks on sale for $5.99/lb. were delicious.
Honestly, the only thing I've been repeatedly unable to find are certain brands / types of cold cuts and blocks of cheeses. (Probably TP would beca problem except I haven't looked. We got plenty from pre-covid Costco purchases, and I dont want to be a hoarder.)
The people I saw buying on the news didn't look like hoarder types and probably don't have a mechanism to store all that chicken....my guess is there's a point person in each family buying it and then doling it out to extended family. I have an extra freezer in my garage that's almost out of room and I don't even have THAT much meat in there. If someone wants to hoard 40 pounds of chicken and they don't have extra storage I wish them luck.
Yeah I do wonder about why they chicken can't be redirected to retail. I'm finding chicken, but it is not as well stocked as usual. I'm happy though if companies are coming up with creating ways to sell rather than losing that chicken or the chickens getting too old, and there is definitely a market.
Me personally I'm eating 5 pounds of chicken a week. If this was close, and I knew lines weren't too long, I'd likely go. But yeah I couldn't store 40 pounds, 20 maybe.

Retail has to order it, and the volume is huge.
And, they are doing better at 88¢/pound than they will get wholesale to grocers, I think.
A lot of this is excess that would have gone to restaurants, etc. Gotta move it or lose it.

That's what I heard it - it was going to restaurants - must have something to do with how it's packaged that the grocers don't want it or something. We are all sure getting a lesson supply chain logistics, aren't we?
I saw the news story about it. Wouldn’t trust it ...but if I couldn’t find any chicken or meat, then I’d buy .
