What areas are you wanting to travel? Or from where are you coming? I can give an enjoyable route in northern Wake if you're interested.

When things open up, what are some back roads trips around here to enjoy? may be within an hour drive or so from Cary/Raleigh area?

As with any of the back roads, idea is to enjoy the trip without going too fast. Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap with 318 curves in 11 miles. America's most exciting 11 miles.

NC 42 between Fuquay-Varina and Sanford is probably the best combination of something local, not insanely congested, and reasonably fun to drive on. The curvy section of Holly Springs Rd between Ten Ten Rd and Cary Pkwy is somewhat fun, but congested for most of the day.

I enjoy Catfish Lake rd in Havelock that runs from 70 through the Croatan National Forest. I also enjoy the drive between Boone and Johnson City around Wataugua Lake. This is 321. Would not recommend that drive at night.

A bit further than an hour... but less than two hours from Raleigh there is NC 66 north of Winston-Salem. It starts off slow... but once you get to the Hanging Rock area... its gets fun. No real elevation change.... and you dont have to worry about any cliffs or anything... so you can push it a bit harder than you can one one of those mountain roads. It ends at NC 89... you can either turn back around and head back south.... or continue on 89 towards Mt Airy. Not as twisty... but some good sweeping action.

Even in the 1980's, High House was a nice curvey little way to get into Cary from the west. You could even see a nice little House High on the hill --- hence the name -- or so they tell me.

Does Wade Avenue from Capital to the Beltline count?

Green Level Road, from Hwy 55 to (near) 751 use to be fun.

This is somewhat similar to what I was going to post. Pick a destination then take back roads to get there. Not as exciting as what you're looking for but certainly a change in scenery. Anything along the older sections of US 1 (or even "Old US Hwy 1" in Friendship/New Hill) are unique.

It's pretty amazing that once you get about 30-40 minutes outside of Raleigh its like stepping back in time.
