Except this is none of the above. It's an extra expense that families are being forced into. They don't have a choice.

They waited too long to find out how many people were doing VA. Since they are trying to keep all the balls in the air at once, they just don't have the numbers they need. Apparently schools thought this whole thing would magically resolve by now, instead of starting to plan in oh, say March or April. Every major company in America has a disaster plan in place but the 15th largest school district in the entire country didn't.

If it makes you feel any better, the 12th biggest school district (Fairfax County, VA) hasn't done any better. According to my hundreds of Fairfax friends on Facebook, it has been a sh*tshow.

Schools are not equiped for this and with the infection rates changing constantly and the fact that the State mandated they offer a virtual option this is an impossible ask. Only schools with deep pockets were going to be able to handle this smoothly. I am not saying the WCPSS could not have done some things differently but lets be fair, they were told they needed two different schools operating at once. The bigger the disctict the harder this will be to organize.

In addition,to now having the two different ways of teaching they need to add education to all staff about PPE, implement distancing and enhanced cleaning. All require money that the GA is not willing to fork over. How could this be anything more than a s---show.

I agree it's a sh*t show no matter where you live. But to have your head buried in the sand and have NO idea, not working on any contingencies at all....part of disaster planning is planning for anything and the idea of a pandemic has been bandied about for at least two decades. What if we had a blizzard like we had in 2000 after a hurricane like Fran? We would have a year where kids miss 4 weeks of school. No reason that should even be an option in 2020. I fully understand playing ostrich is the easiest option and I fully understand WCPSS is not alone in this. All I can say is the education better be world's better than it was last spring.

The problem is that there is a raging battle between "WANT” and "KNOW.”

Everybody wants schools to open and the vast majority know it’s the wrong move right now given the state of CV-19.

The sad thing is, in the end (several weeks) when the first teachers, grandparents and parents start dropping like flies, schools will close again and all the back to school angst will be for naught.

I don't know that it's the wrong move. I do know that what I hear on the news leads people to believe it's the wrong move.

I don't think anybody knows, and I don't think it's wrong to see how it goes with precautions in place, especially when we have the capability to easily switch to remote if necessary. That originally was the whole point of setting up a "virtual academy", to provide the option to those that wanted it, and provide a fallback should schools need to close.

I think your last statement is a bit much, and part of the problem.

Schools are more important than movie theaters for a variety of reasons.
