I don't mean to hijack the post (if I am).....
I am enjoying all of the positives about the schools. We are deciding (still) about whether we should relocate here. Wake is supposed to be one of the best school districts I've heard. We have no problem with year round schools. We actually like that idea. We are nervous about redistricting, and for our son (who will be in K next year) to be placed in a school on the other side of town (haven't chosen a city to live in yet). Far away. I will drive both my kids to school, so I'm not worried about bussing or anything. I just don't like the idea of them being so far. Does this happen?
I have been here for 8 years - throughout the majority of my children's school careers I have been pleased - I don't find the system great but I believe smart people learn in spite of their teachers - I have found a great deal of dedication on the majority of the teachers in the district - my only major concern is for Holly Springs High School - it is a HORRIBLE place to send your children - I hope the BOE realizes they need to address the numerous complaints regarding the administration in that school and make some major changes.
My son went to Brentwood Elementary, East Millbrook Junior High, and Millbrook High School. He earned a $25,000/year pre-med scholarship at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York, where we have relatives. He decided he prefers Raleigh and didn't like medicine, so he transferred to NC State and is double majoring in Business and Math. He's doing exceptionally well and plans to earn an MBA. (He's 20 now.)
When I moved down here, the people back home said schools weren't so great down South. I think they are just fine.
Of course, this was before all the reassignments. Be sure you research that issue before choosing a school.
I have friends at many high schools in Wake County, and our kids are all studying the same stuff... AP, Honors and Academic levels are offered at all the high schools. There are differences in the electives... but they are just that.. electives...

I don't know anyone whose children are placed in a school on the other side of town. At most, your child will be a 15 minutes car ride away.

Yes it does happen. For example, parts of Heritage are districted to Knightsville.

I am originally from Rochester, NY! We are considering a move to the Raleigh area this summer if I get the teaching job I am interviewing for! I am glad to hear that the schools are good when compared to the north. My son is only 2, but he will be in school soon enough. Any one know anything about the Pre-Eminent Accademy? K-8 Charter school.
I recently moved back to Rochester NY from the Raleigh area. The schools are better here (with the obvious excpetion of the inner-city schools). Not to say the schools in Raleigh ( Wake County) are bad...but they are very unorganized and the system is too big. Teacher pay is WAY lower down there (then again so are property taxes) .As you can see from this thread there is a lot of frustration over the frequent reassignments and not-so-uncommon policy of having kids going to school far from home. Unlike here where you have Brighton School System, Fairport School System, Rush-Henrietta etc....where your kids will go to school in the town you live in (or whichever school is closest, which may be in another town), down there unless you are in Chapel Hill...the school system is county-wide. When we lived in South Raleigh our kids were assigned to schools almost 30 minutes way in Apex, and then shortly after we moved to Apex my daughet was reassigned to Panther Creek Highschool 20 minutes away in Morrisville (May have said this before on this thread so pardon my broken-recordness). Again, the fact that there aren't town school systems or neighborhood schools in most of the triangle does mean that property taxes are much lower down there, which is a big draw for many people..but it does make the teacher pay significantly lower. Just something to consider.

I live in Fuquay and both of my kids will be sent to Holly Grove in Holly springs - different town altogether. I love the year round program but not happy about being in a different town (extra-cirricular activities and supporting a town I don't live in) -- nothing against Holly Springs - but trying to give my kids a sense of community too. So can I say I'm "half-happy" with the school system?

Thanks for the info. It is something we are considering. I am realizing that I am taking a pay-cut whereever I go at this point because I am a seasoned teacher in Williamsville CSD in the Buffalo area. The taxes do seem to make a big difference, and my husband is ready to get to nicer weather...Being origially from Alberta, Canada , you would think he could handle a WNY winter. We just want to get settled and find a place to call home. Our son isn't in school yet, and we would like to have more children, so figure that now is the time to go! It also seems like an area where my husband will be able to find work fairly easily...He is in audio/video production.
Where in Rochester are you? I grew up in Gates, extended family is still all there. Sometimes it seems like no one ever really leaves Rochester! I do miss it when compared to the Buffalo/Niagara area where I am now.
