Thank you for the rest of your comment which is more applicable to my concerns.
Many people assume that anyone who lives in NY lives in the city.

I think Cary could work well for you too if you don't have to have new construction. Lots will usually be bigger on older homes, too.

Good luck with it all, but as most in your place will do, I believe you assume too much working out in your favor and too little not.
Beware of painting yourself into expensive corners.

For sure you should focus on areas based on which job you get. If you get the job in Clayton; it would surely make sense to live there. If you get one of the jobs closer to Durham/Chapel Hill; it would make more sense to live on the western side of the Triangle.

Looking at the type of house you can get for under $300k in Clayton only to end up getting the job near Duke or UNC would set you up for a miserable commute if you choose to live in Clayton or for quite the sticker-shock/ disappointment shopping for homes in Western Wake, Durham, or Chapel Hill.

You can get into Apex at that budget, it won't be a new house but it's doable. Probably a good central location as it's near Highway 64 and 540. If you want to move here you're going to have to deal with the re-districting issue and do NOT listen to any realtor who tells you a house or neighborhood is safe from that issue. Time and again when WCPSS moves kids around people say "I just bought here for the schools and my realtor told me we'd always be zoned for these schools!". If you really want to avoid it as much as possible, buy in a bigger neighborhood, not a neighborhood that is just one or two streets. Also check to see if it's been moved before as WCPSS likes to target the same 'hoods over and over.

That's a ridiculous assumption. She's from Central NY not NYC - you do know doctors and nurses and have been laid off and furloughed because there's been no elective procedures and people are not visiting the ER and putting off their medical care, right?

Sorry that I started this whole topic by questioning her being furloughed. My apologies - I must have watched too many Andrew Couomo news conferences.

Fellow NP here....retired from Duke last year and moved to the coast. I can’t stress enough...do not move to a particular area because you can get more bang for your buck in terms of housing. You won’t be happy. Personally, I would not want to live in Clayton. If you want to be close to your sister, look into Apex. Prices have gone way up in the past few years but you should be able to find something $300-325K. It won’t be brand new and may need some updating but you can find something nice.

Holly Springs and parts of Fuquay Varina are close to Apex and both have really grown in recent years. Your commute will help dictate which are good options for you. I also agree with a previous poster that you may want to consider renting. Even a nice apartment in Apex...will give you some time to settle into your job and look around.

Best of luck.

I took your post to mean it was too bad she was being furloughed in the middle of a pandemic, not that you doubted it. I can't read emojis I guess LOL.

Re your current job I certainly support your decision. My remark was related to an earlier comment by someone surprised you could not have a nursing job where you live currently. One thing to be aware of when you look for a house in our area is that homes will sell very quickly in your price range, unless they are real dogs. So you might want to identify an agent at a big agency who will be ready to roll for you as soon as you know where you will be working. Many experienced agents cover many towns within 20 miles or so of RTP.

BTW I made a perfectly innocent comment that several posters have taken it upon themselves to try to shame me over. Clearly their own misconceptions are getting in the way. Lots of places are looking for staff to assist with CV19, thus those nurses can pick their locations.
