My husband is taking a position at Duke Med Ctr and we are looking to move to Durham this summer. I've found some nice houses in a subdivision called Prescott Place. Does anyone have an opinion on it? I was told by my realtor that one issue is that it's close to I-40 and there can be some highway noise. Has anyone had experience with this? We do plan on actually visiting soon, but I thought I'd do some research beforehand. Thanks in advance!
I haven't hung out in that neighborhood in particular, but in my opinion you typically have some kind of noise no matter where you live, and after some time no longer notice it. Usually when I hear someone mention noise from 40, or the airport, or wherever, it kind of boggles me, since these same people want to be right near that area for convenience.
Even in the middle of the country I hear airplanes from time to time.
We looked at a house in Prescott Place before buying our current house. It was on the buffer with I-40. I'm tolerant of traffic noise, but we did think it was a bit loud and intrusive. The house was a typical track house. The neighborhood was attractive. We liked the location near 40 and Chapel Hill. The yards were a bit small, but then most new construction in that price range has smallish lots.
Not all Prescott Place houses border I-40, so I imagine there is a huge difference between an interior lot and one on the I-40 buffer. Spend some time hanging out on various streets in the neighborhood during rush hour - that should give you a good indication of whether it's really an issue.
Thanks to everyone for your input. I really appreciate it!
