You get used to it. I'm from PA. When I lived in Chicago, my longest commute was Hyde Park to Skokie on public transit.
I moved to Chicago from the South for grad school. I did not get used to the cold (and the wind). Lovely city and Hyde Park is indeed an interesting, eclectic neighborhood. I lived in a high rise with a beautiful view of Gary, Indiana (it’s not too bad at night). When graduating, my future employer asked me where I wanted to relocate...I said “someplace warm.” My wife, completely separate from my own timeline in Chicago, said the same thing (she’s from California). We both eventually ended up here in Raleigh.
NC winter has been a shock to me. I moved here from the west coast and was freezing my butt off because my winter wardrobe was jeans and sweatshirts.
Don't head to the upper midwest then...even at NC's coldest, those places make NC seem balmy.
We moved here from MA (not as cold as MW, but perhaps more snow than MW). I have stored all of my winter coats/snowboarding gear. Haven't gone "warmer" than a Northface vest and a thermal in our 3+ years here.
