I was just there today at the Spring Forest DMV for my Real ID and it was a semi cluster waiting outside. The lady with the clip board came out a few times and it was not quite evident if you had to wait in the long line with an appointment, especially as I arrived around 5-10 minutes before mine. It seems folks come at varying times before their appointment time even though it says to not arrive before x time on your appointment, so several people were rearranged behind those of us with earlier appointment times even though they were there before us.

I did not get in to the building until maybe 25 minutes after my allotted time and once inside it took a good 10-15 minutes sitting in one of 5 chairs to get called up to one of the agents. They had about 5-6 agents working.

I had all of my documentation and was processed fairly quickly. I would not have had to take a vision test, except that I had LASIK surgery and wanted to get the restriction removed, which I did.

Whether or not the vision test is required probably depends on whether or not your license is actually due for renewal. Mine was, and I opted to do RealID at that time. I had to do the vision test, as I usually do when renewing.

That’s the way I’d do it... opting to wait for real ID until it was time to renew. I already have 2 passports (American and French) so I really don’t need a third form of ID. My passports are only a couple of square inches larger than my license and I can carry them in my purse without issue. No worries.

Thanks for the replies on the vision testing. I have very good vision so I"m not worried. For some reason I remember having a short additional traffic sign test. Maybe I'm thinking of when I got my North Carolina license from out of state.

I was expecting the road sign test when I went for a renewal last year but learned when I got there that they dropped it for renewals a few years back.

Mine today was a duplicate as I had renewed a couple of years ago online when it actually expired. Since I did it online I obviously did not have to take the vision test at that time, nor was it mandatory for my duplicate except I wanted the restriction removed.

I went to DMV site and there aren't available appointments in Raleigh area. Closest office with appt is Durham:
https://skiptheline.ncdot.gov/Webapp...ppt/UseZipCode

Did you experience the same thing? Do you check everyday to see if any slots open up?

I’m curious about this too since I’ll be moving to NC in Mid-Sept and I want to change my stuff over so I won’t be on the hook for tax for any more than I have to in VA.

The worst part is that I have to have the NC license before I can switch my car over to NC per the DMV website.

Can anyone speak for sure if I can get the license without an appointment or not?

I can tell you that appointments are mandatory, at least at the Spring Forest DMV office I went to. They were turning folks away that showed up without one. As you would probably have to show them your current license and do some paperwork, it would seem that you need an appointment.

Just an FYI, by dumb luck (or booze) of being awake Saturday at midnight, I was able to grab an online appointment at a DL office in Durham the day after I move in. Apparently new appointments at each office become available every day at midnight. Just another trick if you happen to be awake at that time.
