People tend to drive the speed at which they feel comfortable. Something like 85%. There are the outliers that will go super fast no matter what.
But if you made the speed limit 100, very few would be going anywhere near that. That's why I don't buy that raising the speed limit is inherently dangerous.
The limit on 540 is 70 and I rarely go that fast. Normally upper 60's.
In Texas when driving I go like 80-85. Wide open, long roads and very flat.
I think you underestimate the amount of stupid people present in our world today. Raising the speed limit will tell stupid people that it's safe to travel at that speed and/or 5-10mph higher even though these people are very bad drivers with bad technical skills and have no business doing so.
I think 60 is fine for the two lane portions below exit 4 but around exit 10 where it's wide open and 4 lanes it should definitely be 65 or 70.
Truthfully the only place in the Triangle area I drive below speed limit is Wake Forest Road where it feels like my tires are running over both sides of the lane at the same time.
I set my speed based on traffic, weather and road design, not what the speed limit sign says.
Sometimes it’s perfectly safe to go 75-80 when traffic is really light and you are far between exits and other times it’s dangerous and stupid to go faster than 40 in heavy rain & traffic.
I guess not many of you young whippersnappers remember back in the days when the average highway speed limit was 55MPH....
People here don't seem to understand how to use on ramps properly or navigate merging traffic without slamming on the brakes. Then there are those that think I440 is a local city street and drive a whopping 45MPH....so it's not only the people driving fast that can cause problems.
I usually have a 5 over personal rule and I get passed like crazy on 440
Mine on highways is 9 over, and I get either passed like that on 440 or get pressured into dangerous situations because of aggressive speeders. It's noticeably worse than what I experienced diving in the the Tri State area up north, though that was many years ago.
I can generally handle the speeders, it's the reckless weavers and tailgaiters that is the real problem.
Oh no, we're having 2017's conversation all over again.....
I believe the reasoning behind keeping the speed limit low is that 440 is more of a cramped, urban freeway. Typically urban freeways don't have high speed limits due to higher traffic volumes, smaller medians, and smaller shoulders.
