We were out looking at homes in early December and our real estate agent told us that this portion of 540 would be done and open shortly. We were looking at housing, I believe in the Wendell/Knightsdale area and were concerned about the commute to RTP.

There was a story on the WRAL news last night about how it'd be at least another month!

In terms of living there, the highway will open very soon. January, February.
Very minor finishing touches to be done.

At this point in time I would not allow the completion of the highway to deter me from buying if other housing criteria were met.
Heck, if you are making an offer today, it may be open before you close.

Even with 540 opening, commuting to RTP from Wendell or Knightdale sounds like a daily nightmare to me.
