We received our first estimate this week to add a detached garage and it made my eyes water (~$135/sqft). I've looked around online at calculators and they're figures are all over the map, so I was hoping someone here may have built a garage recently or had some knowledge they could share.

I am in the process of doing this. I have received quotes from ~$80 to $113 sq ft. This is for a two car garage with just the basics - siding, roof, concrete floor, exterior lights and minimal inside finishing. I will not have a second floor, or even a big loft area.
I have seen that there is a lot of activity with many homeowners now doing remodeling, so you may have trouble getting quotes from the smaller guys. I had one contractor say "Even the guys that do crappy work are busy."
1) focus on the specific contractor.. let the price end ride a bit
2) have a specific set of plans to bid from for apples to apples comparisons
2a) spend money for these plans if you need to
Yeah our local HD and Lowes here in Apex are apparently struggling to even keep basic 2x4's in stock right now. We were told that basically everyone is bored and doing projects right now so it's impossible to know when anything will be in supply. Prices are crazy as a result.
I imagine next year (if a vaccine is developed / things are under control) hopefully people are traveling more and everything flips on its head, so prices should probably drop down again. At least I hope so, because I eventually want to finish off my attic space and screen in my porch.

This is good advice. We're planning to at least seek out having architectural plans done for some work in the future so we can better compare things.
