Could anyone recommend an *excellent* psychiatrist locally? The person must be smart, but also warm and kind and happy and an excellent listener.

The doctor I see is kind, but she pushes me out of the office after 20 minutes and she does not remember my stories. I think it's just time for a change.

¡Gracias!

Is this for medications or therapy? I have someone in Chapel Hill for meds.

many psychiatrists don't see people for therapy anymore, just med management. That's why your appointments are short. They aren't interested in your stories, only your symptoms.

Ask the psychiatrist if there are therapists in the practice. I'm a LCSW and I work closely with psychiatrists to treat people. Look for a therapist instead.

I can recommend Carolina Partners but I've lost a few therapists who have left the practice.

like someone has said before -psychiatrists MDs don't see people for therapy, and usually have very limited time slots.

I've found with my family, that the ones that actually have more than a 10 minute slot are the Psychiatrists that do not accept insurance and are "out of network." So you pay up front and then submit the bill to your insurance companies. With these doctors, you get 30 min followups and maybe 1 hour or more of new patient time.

Thanks all. I have a therapist I see regularly.

I know this is America, but I want something more than a smug MD who thinks s/he can hear a 15 minute story of my life and then push meds on me.

It doesn't have to be this way.

I don't think it's them being smug. Well, no. Some are.

What it really comes down to is what insurance will cover.

If we had better mental health coverage here in the US, you would not be here asking for an MD who also does talk therapy. You could easily find one.

Absent that, your best bet is an MD that you like who partners with a few therapists.

Maybe this will help: https://psychiatrists.psychologytoda...leigh&spec=423

I did not rwad them all, but did notice that Neil Scheuruch specifically states he has an interest in psychotherapy.

I'd also suggest you seriously consider including PA's and Nurse Practitioner's in your search.

Good luck!

I strongly recommend checking out Dr. Jennifer Siddle at Cary Family Psychiatry & Psychology Associates. She is a psychiatrist who does therapy in addition to med management. Her therapy appointments are 30-60 minutes. She is very friendly, warm, and easy to talk with.

That said, they do not accept insurance and will be considered out-of-network. You have to pay upfront and then submit it to your insurance carrier for reimbursement. They are pretty expensive, but they are pretty much exactly what you are looking for.
