The middle photo is funk and soul icon Betty Davis. It is part of the NC Musicians Mural Project that Scott Nurkin is doing. He is doing really great work honoring some of the amazing musicians that have come from NC. He updates most frequently on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ncmusicianmurals/

He is incredible. The one he did of Coltrane was a pretty popular post on reddit for a while. Betty Davis in Durham is gorgeous. You kind of don't expect it to pop up after the whole wall of huge portrait like murals if you are on the other side of O2 Fitness.

LOVE both of those. It really is wonderful to have that creativity and talent over here for the public to enjoy. I never thought I'd be a fangirl of a commercial real estate developer, haha, but am grateful they made this happen.

Poppy thanks for that link, I will check it out.

I am pretty sure there will be some backlash to this too. I am pretty there will be those who'll say that the murals of (mostly) Black, Durham artists will be in a place that regular Durhamites won't afford to live, eat or play. I am sure all of that will happen. Personally I'd like to think of it as providing patronage to these artists to display their art and make themselves visible. Also, leave their mark.

Agree but this isn't a particularly fancy or expensive area by Durham standards, either. Lots of apartments of all ranges and no real fancy homes until you get a bit south to Hope Valley.

I DO expect complainers that few white faces are on those murals, but they can go paint their own.

This is right off 15/501 near Target, where the Kroger was years and years ago.

Wow! Those are amazing! I'm definitely going to take a look this weekend! Thanks for sharing!

Finally made it over that way today to get lunch, and it’s even more amazing than I imagined! There were quite a few people walking around and driving through to check it out like a big open air gallery.

There was still a little work going on, so I’m hoping to get back with my artist daughter next week so she can watch the process. Things have been tough lately with everything going on, so it’s nice to see something so beautiful being created.

Yes I agree! There are some I haven't really seen yet except in my car...the ones facing Shannon Road (the walkway was blocked last week) and then some that are in the apartment complex and face 15/501. I'll go back this week. It's really nice to see everyone looking at them - I had that same feeling about a big gallery.
