We'll see what happens in the next 3.5 hours. Reimer is an upcoming UFA. Teams who have already given up on the playoffs are unlikely to want Reimer, I would think, unless he will verbally commit to signing a new contract with them. As for teams who are hot for the playoffs, you'd have to find one who needs depth at goalie but has a surplus player that the Canes need (the proverbial right-shot D) -- or who is willing to give up a top prospect or a draft pick.
Just a tweak. One defenseman for another who can shoot from the right side and who might have more snarl than Fleury. So ends Fleury's time in Carolina. Maybe there's disappointment that the 7th player drafted didn't develop into a star, but in fairness to the Canes the 2014 draft pool wasn't great -- especially not for Ds. The new guy is paid minimum wage and will be a UFA in the summer, so the Canes will have a little more cap headroom than if they had kept Fleury.
After tonight I kind of wish they would have bolstered the offense, this team 5v5 isn't very good. I know they got Paquette recently but he's not a goal-scorer.
Canes are about middle of the league in 5-on-5 scoring... which means they're well behind the leading teams. On the other hand, they are near the top in 5-on-5 goals against. If you play tight D, you won't score as much. Bottom line, their net goals (for minus against) on 5-on-5 are reasonably good. Clearly, though, the team is where they are because of PP and PK.
Mrazek was 1st Star on the Canes' Roster last night.
Would have been a blowout except for his efforts. I felt bad for him, giving up that gamewinner in OT, because he deserved a better outcome.
Interesting that the Bolts let the Canes hang in that long, though. Tonight should be another battle.
Canes are now in 2nd place in the league! What are the chances that we win the cup again this year?
Honestly there's not really a good answer for this because the Stanley Cup Playoffs are incredibly wide open, whoever gets in has a shot really. I mean, the 2019 Lightning team that tied a league-record for most wins in a season was swept in round 1!
But, they IMO are starting to play their best Hockey in the last 3-4 games and that's a good sign going down the stretch. The big thing right now is at the very least getting home-ice advantage in Round 1, right now if the season ended they'd be first in the division and would play the Predators.
