I think that has been around for many years. Formaldehyde, etc.
Tighter houses, without fresh air turnover make it worse.
So, I tell my wife, "No. We cannot replace the windows. We need the passive fresh air they provide, even when closed, 24/7"
Speaking of windows being closed. There is no one in our neighborhood who has ever opened a window regardless of the season in all the years we've been here. Is that a Southern thing?

I loved opening windows in the springtime until I noticed that everything got coated in pollen!

Yes, it is. I have some screens somewhere but leaving them in causes the window sills to get dirty (outside). It is so ridiculous, there are some days the heat is on overnight and the AC in the late afternoon.

LOL...I have screens on about 3 windows.
No screens on front of house...they darken the interior and don't look as pretty from the curb!
There are maybe 5 days a year that I open those 3 windows! A day like today! Not too hot. Not too cold. No pollen!!!

You made me laugh thinking of home that I have toured with wooden windows and a visible 1/4 to 1/2 in gap on the side!! BTW that grubby resale sold for over $400,000, location, location, location.
