The owners of Cameron Village are renaming it because of Mr. Cameron's past exploits.

Better watch out Sir Walter, you may be next.

I'm fine with not naming stuff after people anymore but I'm afraid that people won't be creative as you can see from some of these cringey subdivision names

The owners of the district have made that decision, just to be clear.
I wonder what effect this will have on the adjacent neighborhoods like Cameron Park, Cameron Village, Cameron Village Condominiums, and any business that has Cameron in the name?
I suspect that getting the public to adopt the new name is going to be very challenging as the name is deeply entrenched in the city's lexicon and history.
Personally, I think that they'd have an easier transition to a new brand if they just called it "The Village", as in "The Village Deli", etc. I think that shortcut/nickname is already used, and would be a more easily adopted transition.

during the Oberlin Village hubbub over the last several years, culminating in the renaming of the Middle School, and 30+ years in Raleigh, this is the first I've heard that it was a farm/plantation with slaves 150+ years ago.

Which is odd because I was reading a blog about Raleigh Civil War fortifications, and this area was outside those protections, though nearby.

As someone who grew up in that area and still has strong connections to it, I was relieved to see they didn't decided to go with The Village which is what I had been expecting. It sounds kind of hokey, and it reminds me of the M. Night Shyamalan movie. Village District suits it better IMO and sounds a bit more modern and urban.

As to the name change itself, I'm still processing. While I knew the Oberlin history, I never knew about the Cameron history, and I suspect most people didn't. I'm just trying to image the practical implications of the name change and how this might affect surrounding areas like Cameron Park.

There seems some historical connection to Oberlin Village. That seems a better name than simply the Village, which does indeed give me M. Night vibes.

I thought about them actually using Oberlin in the name somehow, but quickly realized that would be insensitive and wrong to co-opt the name.

People will continue to call it whatever they learned, despite the name changing.
