Westfield was building them in 2007-2008. It seemed odd at the time, throwbacks...

Do you mean Robuck split? That homebuilder built a ton of splits in the Raleigh market over the decades.

That would be the answer. I checked with my 82 year old father to earlier. He said people shortened it to “buck” back in the day. Or at least some people. Thank you.

Whenever I visit someone that lives in a split, I quickly realize that it doesn't appeal to me. Encountering stairs every time I go to the kitchen, or the bathroom from the living area. Bleh.

I can understand why they might work well for a family with all of the children out of toddler age, though.

If they could design one with a powder room on the main floor, it would be a game changer.

That's an interesting recollection from your father because I don't ever remember it being shortened from Robuck to Buck. He must have run in different circles?
Your father is the same generation as my parents. I'll have to ask my mother.
I do remember always seeing RE advertisements calling them Robuck splits.

Ah, big difference. Inflation calculator says that is about $178K in today’s dollars, so she beat inflation at least

I am not surprised, I remember seeing something similar where I am from up north around 2002-04. I feel like they were priced around $80-99k depending on whether or not the basement was finished.

I have a soft spot for split level/raised ranches. I didn't grow up in one, but a lot of my childhood development consists of them. I wouldn't want one, but I can definitely see how they would appeal to someone with kids. If I lived in a pricey area (Boston, LI) up north where the inventory was slim, I'd probably be more open to one.
