Correct. Again....I see no reason why someone from Richmond would make a daytrip out of visiting the Triangle either unless they had family/friends here and came for a visit.
You're both on point. I'm from Northern Va and have lived in the Triangle for 16 years now. I only drive through Richmond and do not stop there, unless I'm getting food or gas. That being said my wife grew up in a small town 60 miles west of Richmond (in Southside Va) which we visit from time to time. I also know several people from the Richmond area that live in the Triangle. I'm sure they have a reason to go to Richmond. As you've both stated though, Richmond is not a tourist destination to us, just like Raleigh or Durham is not a tourist destination for Richmonders. Hey Raleigh and Richmond both start with the letter "R" so we have something in common at least.
Well, there's nothing magical about Charlotte or Winston-Salem or Wilmington either. But they are all 2 1/2 hours or less away which make them good day trips from the Triangle.
Charlotte has big city amenities...and Winston is closer, and Wilmington has the beach.

Can't say I've made many daytrips to Winston (minus elementary school fieldtrips to Old Salem the summers during college I spent working at a Summer Camp in the mountains where Winston was the closest city)...but yeah Charlotte has Carowinds, WWC, NFL and NBA stadiums....and Wilmington is on the coast.
I might be the only poster here who day trips (and repeats) to anywhere I haven't been before. I've day tripped/overnighted to Greensboro, Winston, Asheville, Wilmington, Richmond, Myrtle, Hampton Roads, Columbia, Greenville-Spartanburg, Charleston, DC, Roanoke...y'all need to put your explorer pants on frfr lol. The only ones I haven't been to multiple times are Hampton Roads and Roanoke but I would go back to both again just to do it.
