My son swims with her for the TAC Titans in Cary. He along with a dozen or so team mates all made it to the Olympic Trials over the last couple weeks. She is the real deal....congratulations Claire!

She'll almost certainly make it, but it's not official yet. There are up to 36 "slots," but they're only allowed to take 26 swimmers. So technically, only the winner is guaranteed a slot so far and some swimmers will need to qualify in multiple events in order to free up space for all of the second-place finishers like Claire to get invited.

It's never been an issue before, but there's a bit of a wrinkle this time because they added an event to the program without raising the cap on the number of allowed swimmers, so the math is a little bit harder. Still, she should be high enough up the priority list that she'll make it no problem even if the U.S. has to leave a few people home.

Couple of other Triangle swimmers are in the mix at swimming trials this week:

- Ashley Twichell of Apex has already qualified for Tokyo in the open water 10K swim, but she's competing in the 1500m free in the pool as well. She's seeded second behind Katie Ledecky, but it's tight for that second spot. She qualified for finals in the 400m free in eighth place yesterday, but opted not to swim it in order to focus on the 1500 where she has a better chance.

- Justin Ress of Cary has qualified for tonight's final in the 100m back in fourth place. Again, it's a tight field, so it seems pretty wide open.

Raleigh's Charlotte Hook will be gunning for her own Olympics slot tonight in the 200m fly...she's in third after last night's semifinals.

Ress and Twichell came up just a bit short in their races earlier this week. Twichell may have another shot in the 800m free tomorrow, but the 1500 was her best chance. Ress is entered in the 50m free on Saturday, but not sure if he's going to swim it ...the backstroke was his best shot.
