It seems like healthcare in the US is anything but holistic.
For example in my case, as a teenager I was sent to the hospital for a week of tests for a few bouts of severe abdominal issues This week included a very uncomfortable Lower GI series. They never found out the problem. I finally figured it out, some of those bouts had to be food poisoning, others were simply lactose intolerance. Remember Cap'n Crunch and the other crap we ate then? No doctor suggested this to me.
Another example, some of my headache treatment included drugs and Neurologist visits, which while warranted in some cases, never was TMJ brought up. Figured that one out myself as well - sleeptime clenching was giving me headaches, and instead of drugs and MRIs, all I needed (for those anyway) was a mouthguard.

This is the experience of many people with medical care in the US. It's not so much about finding cures or successful treatments, it's about prolonging treatments, especially for complicated conditions.
If any PCP seems like all they want to do is prescribe you meds for every little thing, run as fast as you can.
