Im currently a permanent sub (and certified teacher) working in PA but will be moving to Chapel Hill Carrboro this summer. Does anyone know how their sub system works? Would you get called every night for a job? Here in Pittsburgh I used to get at least 15-20 calls A NIGHT!
Any info about subbing would be really helpful. Thanks
How Orange County Schools or Chapel Hill/Carrboro may compare with Wake and/or New Hanover County down on the NC coast, I'm not exactly sure. I would think they are very much the same, as Wake County and New Hanover were similar.
I am a retired HS English teacher, certified K-12. I filled-out an online application via the NCDPI -- there are four formats, one of which is for substitute teaching, but Wake County also wanted a paper application. I had to provide three references, with addresses and phone numbers, and there were forms the references had to mail-in to Wake County (I sent SASE to make it easier for them). I also had to have a form notarized, and submit to a background check.
I would tell you to look online at the schools there, and go ahead and send for a paper application/packet of *whatever* the schools may require now. They will probably expect you to attend a workshop session or something similar.
The sub system calls you, but you have, at that point, already designated when you are available, and you can even list just certain schools -- Wake County did not expect me to drive all over the county here, so that was nice. I was afraid, initially, that limiting myself to about a dozen schools would limit jobs. No fear, I can work everyday if I so choose. The system calls after 7:00 pm but not later than 9:30, and it calls around 6:30 a.m. You can choose from available jobs.
When you do some subbing, you'll have the advantage of having teachers request you, and then you don't have to worry with the phone ringing-off the hook. You let the system know you are 'booked.'
I had never done any substitute teaching prior to moving to the Raleigh area, but had retired in 2005 prior to moving here, and thought I'd give it a try. Certified subs are paid about $84/day, and I can choose to work as much or as little as I choose. The pay is by direct deposit to your bank account.
Thanks for the response.. It was helpful. Sounds a bit similar to our system in Pittsburgh. Is anyone familiar with how Chapel Hill/Carrboro district calls their subs??
