Hi, all...!!!
I am new in Chapel Hill and experiencing terrible situation with landlord. The house where I've lived since Janusry is violating codes: illegal alteration of heating and electrical unit, no screens in windows. I requested to fix them but the landlord keeps on postponing even with Town's order.
Unfortunately I paid full one year rent and security deposit when moving-in. Could you help me to find a good lawyer whom I can consult with? I desperately need good lawyer for client, not a good person.
Thank you.

Window screens are not required per code, but I am curious as to what illegal alterations were made to the HVAC and electric service? I cannot recommend a lawyer but may be able to give you some insight on what they did wrong....

So are you wanting out of the lease? What would you be suing for?

Yes, I want out of the lease because the landlord did not comply with the housing code, which means this house is not proper to live. And suing for already paid rent.

Half of registers in this house are not connected to duct in heating unit. No window screen is violation of sanitary code, they said.

The registers need to be connected without question, but window screens are irrelevant in code. Thats a cheap landlord that wont pay the couple hundred bucks to reconnect the ductwork!
