We're in Youngsville. It'll says 3hr 40min. You bet it'll take longer, a lot longer. I95 between Richmond and NoVA is a hot mess.

It's about 4-4.5 hrs, but worth it for $2400. I'd do that drive anytime anyone wants to pay me $2400.

It's 9 hours actually, you got to come back you know :-)

Parking is much more precarious, and expensive.
Security is much more congested.
The time to get there is highly variable and you'll likely encounter a boatload of traffic.
You are flying red eye going there and you are jetlagged to the max coming back, then the LONG drive home.

We visit my relatives in Hungary and I'd easily pay $2,000 more for our family of 4 for the RDU originating flight, in fact we opted for that last time with the RDU->PHL->BUD and BUD->LHR->RDU itinerary, pre-COVID. Time is money, and so is sanity.

Extra 15 minutes to get to Greensboro from where in the Triangle?

From CH, take 86 to Danville, VA then 29 to around Charlottesville, VA. A couple of roads I can't think of right now (I want to say 17 or 117) is an alternative to I-85/I-95.

Well, I guess that's your opinion, but I do not share it!

My sister lives near Dulles as I mentioned and let us park our van at her house for three weeks so no parking issues.

We had no problems getting in and out of Dulles. And there are non-redeye flight available there. You also don't have to go up 95. There are other ways to go. We went the back way up 29, actually. I would definitely do it again if the difference is $2400. If it was just $500, maybe not, but $2400, yeah, sure, I can go that way.

Yes from your side it helps to have a free parking spot.

Another thing I forgot is customs returning home. Would you rather spend 5 minutes in line at RDU or an hour or longer at IAD? COVID risk with such a densely packed crowd arriving from just about every point on the planet? My point is that we've done both IAD and RDU for our overseas trips, and my threshold for taking RDU is about $2,500 delta. $2,400 gets close but honestly the juice ain't worth the squeeze under most circumstances.

Yet another thing is what if the flight is cancelled or greatly prolonged outbound? You can come home for a bit to relax. IAD, you're screwed. Well in your case you have a relative closeby but other folks are screwed.

Incidentally, all European trips are red-eyes departing from US. All of them. You show me one that is not and I'll humbly admit I'm wrong.
