What is the best area in Raleigh or Durham to live with No Car. Use only public transportation and walk.
No bike. Safe area.
Walk to stores, restaurants, etc.

You could try the Main Street area of Carrboro. There is also a free bus service from Chapel Hill Transit. If you are renting, try the Shelton Station, with loft-type apartments.

The Village District area in Raleigh.
Formerly "Cameron Village."

Plenty of restaurants, library, shopping.

WalkScore is a great place to check an address for potential walkability (it tells you how many things are in walking distance but doesn't tell you if there are sidewalks, bike lanes etc....) so just use it as a starting point.

If you found an apartment along the American Tobacco Trail in southern Durham, you could walk to the mall, Target, a couple of grocery stores along with a variety of restaurants.

The Triangle is an extremely difficult place to live without a car. it is very autocentric, and the only public transportation is buses.

So what are you going to need to walk to? And, how far is too far? A mile? Half mile? We need more information on your preferences

The stretch from Glenwood South in downtown Raleigh to The Village District to its west.

Agree, Glenwood South would be a decent option.

A lot depends what your needs/wants are for stores. I assume a grocery store is a must. There’s now a Weaver Street Market in and a Publix adjacent to downtown Raleigh, so living in and near downtown has some advantages. Being close to the bus station would make it easier to get to any other shopping. I know we don’t do much at all in the way of brick and mortar shopping these days, other than groceries, Target and Lowes. If we lived in an apartment or condo, we probably don’t need much of the latter. There’s Targets at North Hills and next to NC State, reachable by bus.

Speaking of North Hills, that seems like an option. Or you might could situate yourself able to walk to it and to things near the Costco.

For Durham, the area around Duke’s East Campus would put you near groceries and downtown.

You only mention Raleigh and Durham proper, but it could be possible in CH/Carrboro or specific parts Cary. For the latter, once Fenton opens in a few months, there’s a few places near it, the existing shopping near Cary HS, and the revitalized downtown. Bus and future BRT to DTR would be easy. You could also perhaps situate yourself to have access by foot to stuff on Kildaire (Food Lion and Big Lots are on the end closer to downtown Cary).
