Hi everyone. My fiance and I are thinking about moving to the Triangle area in 2 years. We both live in the Boston area currently, but I'm originally from Michigan, and she's from Missouri. We dislike the Boston area very much! She's going to apply to medical school at Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill and Wake Forest I believe. I'm going to try and get a management job at a scientific or technical organization. I've been looking at all the towns in this area, and would like to know others opinions. We'll probably buy a condo or townhouse while she's in school so we can live near the university. Can people tell me where the safest areas are within a short distance to Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill and Wake Forest? I've heard that Durham is not a nice place, but there has to be some areas that are nice and safe. Also, I love planning for the future and looking at real estate. I've found some good deals on real estate south of Chapel Hill (in or around Pittsboro). Is there a reason for this? Is there crime, pollution, or are the school systems terrible? Thanks very much everyone.

Default Wake Forest

With regards to Wake Forest University -- the university and its medical school are in Winston-Salem. The university was originally in the town of "Wake Forest" in the Triangle, but it moved to W-S about 50 years ago. If one of you is working in the Triangle and the other is going to W-S everyday, you should look for something in the middle (or in W-S or Greensboro to cut down on the commute).

If you were having to decide how to locate between W-S and RTP, keep in mind that W-S is (if memory serves) about 25 mi W of Greensboro. RTP will be 50 mi E of GSO. Long distances.

The good part is that it's not as bad as doing even 10 miles on 128 or 93 every day

We found our spot in Mebane, which is about 32 mi E of GSO and 26 mi W of RTP, with Burlington 13 mi W. Other towns in this area of decent size are Graham (seems to be about the size of Bedford) and Burlington (population-wise about between Chelmsford and Lowell). There are nice places in all of these cities.

Good Luck. We move in two weeks!

Default Thanks

Thanks for the responses. Yeah, my bad about the Wake Forest thing. That's our last resort anyway. My fiance's first choice is Duke, and then UNC-Chapel Hill. So, I was wondering if the Pittsboro area was nice and safe, and how the school system is. Anyone from that area, or know about that area? Thanks!
