Several people on the reddit thread claim that they have sent them to collections despite calling to cancel. Having called their customer service twice this week, I'm not surprised. It is outsourced to a foreign country.

If you didn't cancel, they did what they said they would do and renewed your subscription.
Yes, more than once.

I have a tendency to call or email repeatedly, Replying To All, and increased frequency, until I get my confirmations.

One reward of doing honest business: I don't feel bad about being a real persistent PITA if the other party prefers that level of interaction.
It is never a poor phone operator's fault, if they are just caught up in the machine. As long as they don't say something stupid....

Yeah. The extended car warranty scammers haven't called in 16 months. Handled.....

We cancelled subscriptions previously with no problems so we didn't think to take notes, record telcons (coming from a strict two party state we didn't think do that), etc.

So yes everyone here who has a subscription and wants to cancel, document the entire process.

I won my credit card dispute with the N & O today. It took a while but I had proof of my cancellation in November. I was going to renew but the cut 4 weeks off of my subscription so I thought it was cancelled until I saw the charge on the credit card.

Wow, this is good to know. I've had the N&O literally my entire life, from when it really was a good paper (a fondest early memory is getting in bed with my dad on Sunday morning while he read me the "funnies"), and every year we weigh whether it's worth the (ever-increasing) subscription price when there is nothing even worth reading (most of the "news" has shown up online days before). It's gotten so the obituaries and the crossword puzzle are all I regularly use. We had literally planned to cancel the next time it comes up--will definitely document the process!

I just got the renewal notice in the mail. $100+ more than I was currently paying. I called and got them to drop it to about $10 more than current. I am going to give it one more year, after subscribing for 30+ years. It is really frustrating to read on a Tuesday, about a meeting that was to occur that Monday. I too like the NYT crossword, as well as the printed comics, but there are fewer and fewer things I like. (BTW - LA Times has free crosswords (same as what is in the Indy Week). You just have to watch a short commercial first.)

I gave up on the N&O completely. It wasn't just the cost. it's the fact the app froze up and auto-quit more times than it didn't.

I sent an email for Jan, then Feb, after the feb email I disputed the charge on my CC. They had an entire work flow for auto renewing subscriptions. I told my CC that I tried on a specific date to cancel etc. A few days later I got an email from customer support saying I was canceled. Now I get multiple calls a week from their call center asking why, assuming they want to offer their trial rate again.

I liked N&O during voting season for their candidate coverage, but after that it just became a deluge of covid fear porn, day in and out and you can get that at free news outlets.
