There is a discussion over in the Raleigh board at Reddit about somewhat questionable practices that the News and Observer puts ex-subscribers through. Saying they haven't paid for their subscription even after they cancel. Sending accounts to collections. Anyone ever deal with this?

Had that happen to me several years ago after I didn't renew my subscription. $600 for a year? Heck no. The N&O threatened to have a collection agency contact me, but I ignored it. Never heard anything more from them.

Their subscription service feels really rickety. Doesn't help that when they hound you by phone to find out why you cancelled, it's some random number and the callers never leave a voicemail. I would guess most people don't answer those calls.

Me, too. N&I kept hounding me with snail mail letters and invoices. I EMAILED them saying I had not, was not and never would renew.

Months later I'm getting phone calls from a collection agency. I forwarded them my earlier emails to the N&I. End of discussion.

(In fairness, it's not only the N&O. Any business that's dying will claw at survival. In the case of newspapers, it's not just the business that's on life support; it's the industry.)

Do you mind sharing what you paid? Mine is coming up for renewal. I think last time I paid around $175/yr for 7-day delivery.

We went with Sunday home delivery only, and of course, 24/7 eEdition access.

I got 2 months at $4.99, and then month-to-month for $9.99 for the rest of the year.
$175 for 7 day home delivery compares reasonably.
We don't renew. We let it die until they treat us as new customers.

I stopped paper delivery a few years ago and went digital.

However, the price kept going up without explanation and notice, so I cancelled my original a couple of years ago. I signed up with a sale over Christmas a few years ago for ~$20. I was OK having that go up to $40, but they wanted $100 for this year (December renewal.) I confirmed that amount, and then notified them I was not renewing.

Because they had auto-renewed after I had cancelled a few years ago, and wouldn't respond, I added in my cancellation email that should they auto-renew, I would seek a refund PLUS $100 for my time in having to deal with their system. They acknowledged the email (didn't say anything about the $100 fee), but this time at least they didn't auto-renew.

I have no sympathy for them. For ages, they took advantage of their monopoly, especially with classified ads. Now, they're crying poverty and begging for donations. Not a chance. Besides, I got tired of reading yesterday's news tomorrow.
