Atlantic Avenue as we know it today is a relatively recent thing. It was strung together from several disconnected streets that had been built at various times, plus some new construction. This happened over a period of about 15 years. The City squeezed Atlantic under the pre-existing 440 as best they could. This also explains why Atlantic from 440 northward alongside Highwoods and Brentwood was not built to the same standards as Atlantic north of Harrod.

The project will rectify some of the worst aspects of this legacy.

I drive the entire stretch of Atlantic Avenue twice a day 5 days a week. I am very interested in how this will play out. I have definitely noticed changes in volumes on that road over the past 15 years.

I learned something from this thread, as I thought all the roads were maintained by the DOT, which I now know isn't the case.

What makes it even more confusing is that the City paid to have some of the NCDOT-maintained streets widened.

In some cases the city did take over maintenance like Hillsborough Street. But yes, for example Six Forks Road is a city project on a NCDOT road.

This project won't get all the way there - there's still the section from Highwoods to Hodges but it will help eventually fill in the gap.
I didn't see much of anything in the way of that...

What they ought to do is extend the Marsh Creek Greenway either to Neuse river or Crabtree Creek Greenways (or both.)

The problem is that around Atlantic and Hodges it floods, all the time.
