What's the deal with trying to book a driving test for a new NC license? I can't find a single DMV office nearby that has any availability until mid-June. Is there some secret I'm unaware of for scheduling a test within 30 days?
It seems like it's the same deal in all states right now. I would keep checking for cancellations. Check every single day, multiple times a day. When I moved to TX, the soonest appointment I found for transferring my license was 3 months away. I managed to reschedule 3 times and eventually found an appointment the very next week.
Also, you might want to check DMV offices in other parts of the state. Check Eastern and Western NC.
You have to keep checking every day - sometimes it's not that they're booked it's that they just only open them till a month out. But the system is crazy - I suggest checking between midnight and 7 am and seeing what's open, and being open to travelling to one a bit farther away if needed. It's absolutely insane the amount of time I spent making an appointment for my daughter.
I would also recommend having an earlier appointment if possible. The DMV will oftentimes run late on their appointments and those who haven't been serviced when the site closes will be re-booked for a future date.
I’d recommend calling an office outside of Raleigh, Cary or Durham. They’re really busy. I needed to renew my expired license and I called the DMV in Sanford. They told me a time I could try to come down and they’d try to get me in but couldn’t guarantee. Granted, an actual driver’s test will take much longer, but it’s worth talking to someone.
For what it’s worth, compared to NJ, the folks that I’ve dealt with at the NC DMV are quite nice and friendly. I’ve never had a bad experience.

Pre-COVID, we drove down to Lillington to renew our licenses. The office was not very busy. We made an afternoon of it, having lunch in town and hiking at Raven Rock, though I realize that may not be practical for many.
Two weeks ago, on a Wednesday, I was in the DMV in Newland, NC and overheard the examiner telling a young applicant for License to come back later in the week so he could take the road test. No mention of appts., just come back later in the week.
Of course, it's also more than a 3 hour drive. Make it a long weekend, come early on a Friday and get the license and stay for some sightseeing.
