Hi there,
Can anyone tell me about the elementary schools in Raleigh? We are planning to relocate from Florida, and have 9, 6, and 4 year old children. We don't know anyone up there, and have no idea what the school system is like. My husbands job will be off of Wake Forest (Blvd.?) So we aren't sure what area we'll be living in yet, but we're looking at North Raleigh. Also, we'll be looking for a church home. We belong to a baptist church now, and are very involved.
Thank you kindly for any help you can offer...Diana

The elementary schools in North Raleigh are all part of the Wake County Public School System. You may want to check the scores from their website. Most of the North Raleigh schools and Cary schools tend to have higher scores, even though they are all part of the same system.

I have 4 kids so I'm very famaliar with the school system. And there are tons of churches in the area so I'm sure you would have no trouble finding a new church family.

I'm also a Realtor here and would be happy to answer your questions.

I do think you should not only check out North Raleigh but also Wake Forest and Cary and a few other areas to see what you can get for your money.

Hope this helps! Vicki

I agree with Vicki's advice, and I would recommend that you read some threads about traditional versus year round schools. My family relocated here from the Tampa area 3 years ago, where I was a teacher, and I taught here as well. Having taught in both systems, and having children in school here as well, I am extremely pleased with the quality of education in Wake County.

As you do your research, you will see (sometimes heated) discussions about reassignments. These occur as schools grow, become crowded, then new schools are built, and the "nodes" are reassigned to fill the new schools. This can happen frequently in some areas that are growing quickly.

Also, some schools have been converted to a 4-track year round calendar, which allows the school to hold more kids, since only 75% of the kids are in school at any given time. My daughter is in year round, by our choice, and I personally prefer it. Some people, however, are in an area assigned to a mandatory year round school.

Feel free to pm me or email me for more information!

I am also interested in knowing about the middle schools in Clayton, NC. We are from NYS and have a GREAT school district.

For information on Clayton schools, check the Johnston County schools website:

www.johnston.k12.nc.us

Wake county is www.wcpss.net

You can compare the test scores at www.ncreportcards.org, although this only gives part of the picture. It would certainly be a good idea to tour the schools where you're thinking of living. While overall, Johston County schools don't look as high as Wake County, I have heard only good things about the schools themselves.
