I don’t have a subscription, so can’t read beyond the paywall. I did see some mention on Twitter that it is a sizable main room, 3500-seat. More capacity than DPAC (~2700), The Ritz (~2000), and Memorial (~2300). I can’t stand the Ritz, so really wouldn’t mind a better venue for what it typically books, but this would seem to be more a competition to the other two.
I love The Ritz. I've had some of the best nights of my Raleigh life there. But yes, it's nice to have another option. Apparently there's supposed to be a rooftop deck on Kane's venue. It would be cool if they modeled it after the Pier 17 Rooftop venue in Manhattan NY
If you go back to 1999, the question was whether the Performing Arts Institute of NC would be in Raleigh next to the NC Museum or Art or somewhere TBD in Durham. The residency of the American Dance Festival was at stake, too. There was protracted back-and-forth that served mainly to mobilize support in Durham. The PAI concept fell apart, but the momentum led to DPAC.
So now, Raleigh will have its DPAC clone -- if slightly larger and probably fancier.

The WRAL article has this quote “we have a partner who shares our vision for opening a state-of-the-art live music experience in this thriving market”. If the focus is on live music, it might end up having a very different vibe than DPAC, which to me always seems to do better at Broadway shows than concerts.
Great news for Raleigh! A venue of that size focused on music will fill a gap in the area's offerings! Like Dire Wolf said, DPAC is set up more for Broadway productions (I think it also does fine for some types of music like jazz), but if this is configured more for energetic shows, getting drinks, etc I think it will fill a gap and help draw acts that might otherwise have passed by the Triangle.

DPAC is operated by Nederlander theaters, which is a Broadway company. An indoor venue this size can be good as it will attract shows that might play Red Hat but can operate all year. I’m not personally thrilled with the location, which I believe is not a good idea in general but better than nothing.
The N&O noted that the Red Hat amphitheater will go away when the Convention Center is expanded, although that won't be anytime soon (~2030).
