I am hoping that someone can lend me some help in finding my perfect neighborhood, if it exists.
I am looking for a place where my neighbors say “good morning” every day. Where there are lots of elementary aged kids (around 6 years old) for my daughter to play with. A place where I don’t have to worry about my daughter walking home from school. Where the kids still play out side until the street lights come on. Relatively close to a mall and metropolitan area (30 minutes is relatively close in my book). A place where you have BBQ’s and the whole block participates. Basically I want to go back in time to what 1950? Does anyone have any idea where I can find this?
Many places in the triangle area fit that for the most part. Cary is probably going to be your best bet with fairly low crime and plenty of neighborhoods with kids. I've found that if you reach out and try to make friends with your neighbors then you will find plenty of people to come over for barbeques. Plenty of shopping malls and stores in the triangle. No the whole block isn't going to come over no matter where you live, they aren't all going to say hi every morning and any place is going to have crime but Cary is probably as close as you can get to what your looking for.

The 50s weren't as perfect as the fantasy either. I see you've posted this in many different forums....have you visited any of these places? With such specific criteria only you are going to be able to tell if you fit in well enough to neighborhood to have a block party.
It does sound like want more a small town then a urban area like Raleigh, Durham, Cary though.
If you do find a place where your child can walk to school, that may change next year with the reassignments going on around here. Best of luck finding the Utopia you describe.

Look at Southern Village in Chapel Hill.
Plenty of kids your daughters age, a walkable neighborhood with neighborhood school that all the kids walk to. Almost zero chance of being redistricted out of Mary Scroggs if you live in the villagel.
Kids always out and about, you can walk to the Lumina Theater, weekends in the summer they have outdoor movies on the lawn, you can walk to Weaver Street Market, the coffee shop, ice cream and some nice restaurants.
Not uncommon to have neighborhood block parties with lots of families and the Chapel Hill FD showing up with a truck for the kids to climb on.....
bluedevilz it does, it really does. Now if only my daughter was still 6. But even at her age (27) I can see her climbing on the fire truck, LOL. I can not wait to move there. Everytime my friend back there tells me what is going on in her neck of the woods, I can't wait to leave over-priced, crappy CA.
